Rising obesity in India.

 


PRIMARY REASONS BEHIND RISING OBESITY IN INDIA:-

  • Increase in sitting time during work and homely times

  • Digital screen time increasing to high alarming levels on mobile, PC & TV

  • High relaince on online and e-commerce for purchasing daily life essentials 

  • Very high dependency on ordering food from food delivery websites

  • Not cycling for short travel distances

  • Using cars & automobiles throughout the day

  • Consuming high amount of carbs & calories through heavy intake of junk & processed foods

  • Drinking carbonated drinks in very large numbers

  • Not consuming high % of Plant based food

  • Very high % of urban Indian not exercising regularly

  • Indians consume a lot of foods prepared from flour (maida)

  • Due to high high % of sugar in every food products, average consumption of sugar is very high

  • Intake of refined oil fried foodsalso veryhigh among Indians. Leading to obesity.

  • Binge eating & snacking is a terrible choice among young urban Indians

  • Alcohol consumption is steadily increasing across India

  • India is known to be the diabetese capitalof the world, due to above stated reasons

  • Insulin reliance of average diabetic Indians is increasing heavily

Note: More than 100 million people in India struggle with obesity. It is observed that abdominal obesity is highly prevalent. In India, 12% of men and 40% of women are abdominally obese. Kerala (65.4%), Tamil Nadu (57.9%), Punjab (62.5%), and Delhi (59%) all have high incidence rates.

The Indian society has to get a sense of realisaton about their lifestyle choices and it's terrible impact on their personal and family health. Old eating habits of average Indians has to undergo a massive transformation. Which requires a change in social behaviour and cultureof the country. The government alone cannot push for this much awaited social transformation. Whichis not limited to urban regions of the country but also stretches to rural areas, due to their rising income levels. 

The road ahead is tough !
