BOOK REVIEW ON "HARAPPA AND JAINISM" | English | T. N. RAMACHANDRAN | Former ASI Director General |
The opinion and questions on the subject, Antiquity of Jainism, is often a consistent topic of
debate & research within India and across the globe, among enthusiasts & academics in the
field of history and archaeology. The general world society believes in two theories of evidence &
explanations: i) The resources stated in the Jain and Vaidik (Hindu ) canonicals, including other
religious texts, ii) The archaeological facts unearthed through excavations and explained
philosophically. The Jain community in India has all the legitimate and valid resources, under
both the theories stated above. But, still a high percentage of native Indian population have very
doubtful levels concerning the antiquity of jainism or how old is Sraman Dharm (jain religion).
High respect is often given to archaeologists working in the field of history & culture. As it's
based on physical evidence. The book titled Harappa & Jainism, has been written & authored by
a reputed archaeologist, having decades of domain experience. A very short book, provides
focussed to-the-point explanation on the excavated heritage from various harappan sites, lying
in current Pakistan. Proper philosophical explanations have been used to interpret the findings.
Often, Hindus interpret these findings in their own perspective, startlingly opposite from Jains &
independent Scholars. This book aims to be unbiased in its approach. Rest, the readers should
believe in the book’s explanations, based on their own observation & judgement.
