Curse OF Manual Scavenging

AN UNPOSTED LETTER

STRICT COMPLIANCE TOWARDS CURBING THE USE OF MANUAL SCAVENGING.

Namaskar Sh.Pradhanmantri ji, I want to highlight the inhuman & dirtiest practice to clean sewerage drains and tanks. Where, contractors force the poor manual labourers to go down the drains and clean the dirt, released by Us. Scores of labourers die and face extreme health crisis, by doing this pathetic practice.

India has achieved, tremendous scientific prowess in defence and space explorations. Yet, we send semi
nude labourers, for a handful of money, to clean the shit generated by households, living in good
comfortable conditions. Whereas, these Scavengers, out of poverty, are forced to do this job. Without
any recommended security attire and equipments.

Why can’t the State Govt be sensitised towards, banning of such hazardous practice, completely. I am
sure, they have enough funds to stop, the most inhuman of work practice. More than money, it’s the
lack in Ethics & Will power.

Mechanisation hasn't been adopted, across the states. Scavenging should be banned! It has been on
papers but state governments haven’t implemented the rules strictly.

There are several alternative, than manual cleaning of drains. Laws exist, but Implementation by the respective Municipal Corporations, fail to address the situation. Civil Society remains helpless and complaining is the only tool, at our disposal. We feel terrible and sad! Numerous deaths been reported within New Delhi. But the corruption and apathy between the corporations and contractors, ignores the basic fundamental rights of the worker. So Sad!

So many deaths are reported, but Centre ignores it, citing it’s a state government duty. State govt give
excuses that it's the job of Municipal Corporations. But the scavenger continue to suffer and die.
Please put an end to this dirty job. A big humble request.
